A bridge between Spain and New Zealand.

Kiwi Spanish Society is a not-for-profit organisation established in May 2021. We promote Spanish culture and language, friendship and connections between communities in both countries.

Our story began with informal connections among Spaniards in Auckland and grew into a formally established society.

Historical information

El siguiente texto recoge las gestiones y la situación descrita por la asociación alrededor de 2021–2022. No representa una actualización oficial del estado de las negociaciones en 2026. Para información vigente, consulta las autoridades competentes de ambos países.

Since the society began its work, and even before it was formally established, one of our members’ main concerns has been to advocate for a social security agreement between Spain and New Zealand, two countries with very different social security systems.

To pursue this goal, we contacted various government bodies in both countries and within the European Union. We held discussions with the Spanish and New Zealand embassies, foreign affairs ministries and the EU Delegation in New Zealand.

At the time of this update, both countries were negotiating a possible agreement. Although talks were initially expected to conclude before the end of 2021, the process was expected to continue into 2022.

Information received by the society at the time indicated that New Zealand had submitted a draft in July after ten months of consideration and that the Spanish ministry was preparing its response. The positions remained different, and further work was needed to reach a balanced agreement.

We have worked to convey the concerns and interests of our members to the relevant institutions and to share updates as they become available. We understand how frustrating a lack of progress can be. By bringing together people affected by this issue, we hope to strengthen our collective voice.
